I've done it myself
From zero travel history to driving in Florida
Before helping others, I went through the B1/B2 process myself. No previous travel, first visit to the US, and an approved visa. In this conversation with Sarim of USwala, I share how I prepared and what actually matters at the interview.

How it works
From first call to interview day in four steps
Every file goes through the same sequence. Nothing is filed until you have reviewed and approved it.
Profile assessment
A free call where we look at your purpose, travel history, finances and ties to your home country, and tell you honestly which visa fits and how strong your case is.
Documents & DS-160
We give you a personal checklist, review every document and complete your DS-160 with you so your answers are accurate and consistent.
Fee & appointment
We guide you through the MRV fee payment, SEVIS fee where needed, and booking your interview slot at your nearest US embassy or consulate.
Interview preparation
Mock interviews in English, Urdu/Hindi or both, on the real questions officers ask, with feedback on clarity and confidence.
Why Visa with Bakar
We don't sell guarantees. We prepare you.
The decision belongs to the consular officer. What we control is how complete, consistent and confident your application is.
Straight answers first
If your profile is weak right now, we tell you before you pay any government fee, and explain what would make it stronger.
Fees written down
Our service fee and every official US government fee are listed separately. No surprise charges halfway through.
You speak for yourself
We never script fake answers. We help you explain your real plans clearly, because that is what officers look for.
Official US government fees
What the US government charges
These are paid to the US government, not to us, and are separate from our service packages.
| Visa | Application (MRV) fee | SEVIS I-901 fee | Key document |
|---|---|---|---|
| B1/B2 Visit | US$185 | Not required | DS-160 confirmation |
| F-1 Student | US$185 | US$350 | Form I-20 from your university |
| J-1 Exchange | US$185 | US$220* | Form DS-2019 from your sponsor |
MRV fees are non-refundable, even if a visa is refused. *Most J-1 categories; some government-sponsored programs are exempt. A US$250 Visa Integrity Fee was passed into US law in 2025 for most non-immigrant visas; we confirm whether it is being collected at the time you apply. Always verify current fees on travel.state.gov.

Common questions
Before you apply
Can you guarantee my visa will be approved?
No one can. Every US visa decision is made by a consular officer at the interview. Any agent who promises approval is not being honest with you. We make sure your application is complete and that you are well prepared.
Where will my interview be?
At the US embassy or consulate in your country. In Pakistan that is Islamabad or Karachi; in India it is New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kolkata. Most applicants must now interview in their country of nationality or residence. We help you book the right slot.
I was refused under 214(b) before. Can I reapply?
Yes. A 214(b) refusal is not permanent. We review what changed in your situation since the last interview and only recommend reapplying when your case is genuinely stronger.
Are B1/B2, F-1 and J-1 visas affected by the January 2026 immigrant visa pause?
The pause announced in January 2026 applied to immigrant visas for certain countries, including Pakistan. B1/B2, F-1 and J-1 are non-immigrant visas. US policy changes often, so we check the current rules for your category before you pay any fee.
Do you work with applicants outside Pakistan?
Yes. Consultations, document review and mock interviews can all be done online on WhatsApp or video call, wherever you are, in Pakistan, India or anywhere else.

HOME / ABOUT
About Visa with Bakar
Hi, I'm Abu Bakar.
I got my own US visa with zero travel history. Now I help people from Pakistan, India and around the world prepare for theirs, the honest way.
My story
ABU BAKAR
Founder, Visa with Bakar
Founder, BenFox Digital
I am an entrepreneur from Punjab. I run BenFox Digital, a digital marketing agency registered as an LLC in the USA, with a team of 15 people.
For years I had never travelled abroad. Everyone told me the same thing: without travel history, forget about a US visa. So I decided to find out for myself.
I prepared properly. I learned what the DS-160 really asks, how officers look at your social media, which documents matter and how to answer clearly at the window. My B1/B2 visa was approved, and I became the first person in my family to fly to the USA, where I attended TechEx North America 2026 with the Pakistan tech delegation, then travelled to New York and Florida.
When I came back, friends and relatives started asking me for help. At the same time, I saw agents charging people huge fees for false promises and “guaranteed” visas. That is why I started Visa with Bakar: honest guidance, real preparation and no fake promises.
Today we have guided more than 50 B1/B2 applicants through their forms, profiles and interviews, and we now also support F-1 students and J-1 teachers.

What officers look at
Strong ties to your home country
Under section 214(b), every visitor is presumed to intend to stay unless they show otherwise. Your job at the interview is to show a clear reason for the trip and strong reasons to come back.
Clear purpose
A specific trip with dates, a place to stay and a reason that makes sense for your life.
Ties at home
Stable job or business, family responsibilities, property or studies in your home country.
Funds that fit
Finances that match the cost of the trip, with a steady history rather than sudden deposits.
Interview preparation
Your B1/B2 interview, explained
The interview decides your visa in one to two minutes. Here is what officers look for and how to prepare.
The first 30 seconds
Walk up calmly, greet the officer and give a clear first answer. First impressions shape the rest of the interview.
A connected story
Who you are, what you do, why you are going and why you will come back. Every answer should fit together.
Calm and respectful
Answer honestly and briefly. If you are pushed, stay polite and explain again. Never argue.
What should I wear to the interview?
Smart and semi-formal. A clean shirt with trousers or jeans, a simple kurta, or a light jacket depending on the weather. Avoid both extremes: a T-shirt with styled hair and chewing gum looks careless, and a three-piece suit looks like you are trying too hard. Dress like the person you say you are.
How long is the interview?
Usually one to two minutes. The officer forms a first impression in the first 30 seconds from how you walk up, your body language and your first answer. That opening answer matters most.
What questions will the officer ask?
Mostly simple ones: Why do you want to go to the US? What do you do? Who will you visit? How long will you stay? The officer often asks the same thing in different ways to check that your story stays consistent.
How should I answer "Why do you want to go?"
Give a short, connected answer: who you are, what you do at home, why you are going, what you will do there, and why you will come back. For example, your job, your family and your plans after the trip. Just saying "I have a conference" is not enough.
Should I say tourism (B2) or business (B1)?
Say your real purpose. B1 and B2 are the same visa. If you are going for tourism but will also meet clients, say both clearly. Hiding one part of your trip, or telling a story that is too polished, usually backfires.
I have never travelled abroad. Can I still get a visa?
Yes. Many first-time travellers are approved, for example to visit a brother or sister in the US. What matters is that your purpose is clear and makes sense for your life, and that you can explain it calmly.
I am visiting a relative. What should I know about them?
Know their full address, how long they have lived in the US, their status there and what work they do. Not knowing these basic details is one of the most common reasons people struggle at the window.
Should I take all my documents?
Take your key documents, neatly organised, but don't expect the officer to look at them. Many interviews end without a single document being checked. Your answers carry the case, and documents only support them if asked.
What if my reason for travel sounds unusual?
Make sure your purpose fits your age and life. A 35-year-old professional saying the main reason is to see Disney World will not sound believable. A wedding, family visit, specific event or planned holiday with dates is easier to understand.
The officer says "I'm not convinced." What should I do?
Stay calm and respectful. Politely ask for a few seconds and summarise your situation clearly: your work, your ties to home and why you will return. Don't argue, raise your voice or get emotional. Being firm is fine; being aggressive ends the conversation.
I was refused. Can I apply again?
Yes. A 214(b) refusal is not permanent and there is no fixed waiting period. Reapplying only helps if something has changed or you can now explain your case much better, so review what went wrong before booking again.
Is a mock interview worth it?
For most people, yes. You pay the $185 fee, wait months for an appointment and travel to the embassy for a one to two-minute interview, and a refusal stays on your record. Practising your answers beforehand is a small cost compared with all of that.
How long can I stay on a B1/B2 visa?
Visa validity and length of stay are different. The officer at the US port of entry decides how long you can stay on each visit and records it on your I-94, often up to six months for tourists.
Can I apply for my parents?
Yes. Parents visiting children in the US are a common B1/B2 case. We prepare the parents' file and the supporting letter from the child in the US.
I was refused before. What now?
Our Premium package includes a review of your previous refusal and a plan for what needs to change before you reapply.

Interview preparation
Your F-1 interview, explained
The officer decides in a few minutes. Here is what they look for and how to prepare honestly.
A genuine student
Clear, personal reasons for your program and university, and a plan to finish it.
Funding in place
Who is paying, how much, and how any loan will be repaid after you graduate.
Plans after graduation
What you will do next, and why it means leaving the US when your program ends.
What does the officer decide in an F-1 interview?
Three things: are you a genuine student who will attend and finish your program, can you pay for your studies and living costs, and will you leave the US after you graduate. By law the officer starts by assuming you don't qualify, so it is your job to show that you do.
Do I really have to list all my social media on the DS-160?
Yes. Since June 2025, every F, J and M applicant goes through a social media review. List every account you have used in the last 5 years, even one you never post on. For Facebook, add your full profile link so the officer finds the right account. Missing an account can lead to a refusal.
Do my accounts need to be public?
Yes. Set all your accounts to public before your interview, ideally a week before, and keep them public until your passport comes back with the visa. Officers check for anything that doesn't match your DS-160, such as a different job start date on LinkedIn.
I forgot to add an account, or I deleted one. What now?
List deleted accounts too if you used them in the last 5 years. If you missed an account, submit a new DS-160 with everything listed, then ask the embassy to update your appointment to the new confirmation number. Usually only one update is allowed, so check every answer before you submit.
How should I answer "Why this university?"
Be personal and specific. "It is highly ranked and has a good curriculum" tells the officer nothing. Talk about the program, the courses, the location, the people or the opportunities that made you choose it. Real reasons show you planned your studies carefully.
Should I volunteer information or only answer the question?
Volunteer the important positives: your background, why this program, who is paying, and your plans after graduation. The officer won't build your case for you. Watch their lead, though. If they interrupt you, stop and answer the new question.
How long should my answers be?
Most interviews last one to three minutes. Keep talking while the officer is listening, but if they cut you off or look ready to move on, follow their lead. Short, clear sentences work best.
Should I answer in English or my own language?
In English. The officer is also checking that your English is good enough for your classes. Simple, clear English is fine. You don't need complicated words.
Will the officer check my documents?
Often not. US visas are decided mainly by the conversation. Keep your documents in a neat, organised folder in front of you and focus on talking. If you bring a bank statement, bring the most recent one.
Is it a problem if I am using a student loan?
No. Many students use loans. Be ready to explain how you will repay it with a job after you graduate and leave the US, because F-1 students can only work in very limited ways.
What if something in my profile is weak?
Be honest if you are asked, for example if your university didn't require IELTS or you didn't get a scholarship. You don't need to volunteer negatives. Focus on the positive facts, like who is funding you. Officers value honesty more than a perfect profile.
I have family in the US. Should I mention it?
Yes, always answer honestly on the DS-160 and in the interview. Officers usually already know about family in the US and any pending green card petition. Hiding it is far worse than having it. Explain your study and career plans in extra detail.
I was refused before. What will they ask?
Expect "What has changed since your last interview?" The officer doesn't expect you to know why you were refused. They want positive updates, such as a better program, stronger funding or clearer career plans.
When should I book my interview?
At least one month before your program start date on the I-20. Social media review adds time, and getting your passport back can take three to four weeks. Officers can refuse if they doubt you can arrive before classes begin.
What should I wear?
Neat and comfortable. No suit is needed, but avoid shorts, flip-flops or stained T-shirts. You may wait in line for hours, so dress for the weather.
Can I work on an F-1 visa?
Limited on-campus work is allowed during studies, and there are options like CPT and OPT tied to your program. We explain the rules during your consultation.
Do you help with university applications?
Yes. Essential Guidance includes university shortlisting. Complete Support and Scholarship Pathway include applications, follow-ups and I-20 coordination.
Is a scholarship guaranteed?
Only in the Scholarship Pathway, and only the amount or percentage written in your contract after your profile assessment. If we do not secure it, your service fee for that package is refunded in full.
How much bank balance do I need?
Enough to cover at least the first year's costs as listed on your I-20. We review your funding documents in the Complete and Premium packages.

J-1 Teacher questions
What teachers ask us most
Do I need a Master's degree or a B.Ed?
No. A bachelor's degree is the minimum. It can be in education or in the subject you want to teach, so a B.Ed is not compulsory. A Master's or B.Ed makes your profile stronger, but it is not required.
How much teaching experience do I need?
At least 2 years of full-time teaching. You should be teaching now, or have finished an advanced degree in the last 12 months with 2 years of full-time teaching in the last 8 years.
I have a gap in my teaching career. Can I still apply?
Often, yes. Schools look at your total experience and how well you can explain your teaching approach in the interview. We review your exact dates in the case review and tell you honestly where you stand.
Is the AMI Montessori course required?
No. AMI is a strong option for Montessori, pre-K and early-years teachers, and it is well recognised in the US. Primary, middle and high school teachers can use other certifications that match their subject and grade level. We help you choose the right one.
I have a local Montessori or teaching certificate. Will it count?
You can still apply. Internationally recognised certifications usually carry more weight with US schools, so we check whether yours is enough or whether an extra course would help.
I teach O and A Levels or Cambridge curriculum. Is that useful?
Yes. Subject teachers with Cambridge, O Level or A Level experience are a good fit for US middle and high schools.
I am a college lecturer. Can I apply as a J-1 Teacher?
The J-1 Teacher program is for primary and secondary schools. If you also have school teaching experience, you can apply for school roles, for example as a high school subject teacher.
How do I find a school that sponsors J-1?
Schools hire through State Department-designated J-1 sponsors. Many openings are posted on US job sites such as Indeed, where you can filter for J-1 or visa sponsorship. In our Teacher Pathway we shortlist 10 matched sponsors and schools for you.
Do I have to pay the sponsor?
It depends on the sponsor. Some cover program and visa costs, others charge a program fee. Sponsors must tell you their fees in writing, so always confirm before you sign anything.
Which documents should I prepare first?
Keep your degrees attested (HEC in Pakistan, or your country's equivalent), your experience letters and a US-style teaching CV ready. Many schools also ask for a US credential evaluation of your degree, which is paid separately.
I was refused an F-1 or B1/B2 visa before. Can I still get a J-1?
Yes. A past refusal does not stop you from applying. A J-1 based on a real teaching job is a different case. Be honest about the refusal on your DS-160, and avoid filing several visa applications at the same time.
Should I apply for EB-2 NIW instead of J-1?
For most teachers, J-1 is the safer first step. EB-2 NIW is a green card route with a strict approval bar, and a denial can show immigrant intent, which can make a later J-1 harder. We can review both options in your case review.
Can my family come with me?
Yes. Your spouse and children under 21 can come on J-2 visas when your sponsor issues them their own DS-2019 forms.
